I'm kinda surprised about this, and wonder what their target audience is... Perhaps both ;) Second episode Konata dreams about a show with mecha drills and pretty girls... Suddenly a nurse with a spaceship in the background appears. This is a Gunbuster reference. There is a timpani and trumpets tune when konata is dreaming something, also Gunbuster (with pitch and a few notes changed ;) Aim for the Top! Gunbuster from Gainax (1988) shows a pretty serious sci-fi story but if you pay very close attention to details, its filled with anime industry inside jokes, references to otakuism and japanese movies, sfx sentai shows, etc. The references are from recent anime, and classic very old stuff.
