He’s the type of character who started off as someone you’d love to get a hold of to stab, hammer and choke until he dies, but somehow once you start to accept him as a comic relief with no real reason to be there, he grows on you like how fungus grows on your bread – you like exactly like it but it still happens.

When everyone thought he has finally kicked the bucket in the previous episode, I continued to believe in his insane luck at staying alive despite the odds without as much as a scratch. And he pulled through.

Patrick and Katie’s marriage immediately reminded me of another somewhat mismatched couple – Johnny and Meryl in MGS4. In fact, both couples are actually similar. The bride is the higher ranking, no-nonsense and generally the one in charge while the groom is the happy go lucky comic relief character of the show.

The final showdown between Setsuna and Ribbons is probably one of the rare stroke of genius that comes along once in a while in Sunrise. It’s quite a proven formula that going all out in the finale and eventually stripping everything down to the basics works. It worked in MGS4 (Old Snake vs Liquid Ocelot), it worked in Gurren Lagann and it worked here.

Having 00-Raiser vs Reborn Cannon, and ending it with Exia vs 0 Gundam was just brilliant. This is easily the best and most entertaining mecha showdown I’ve seen since Gurren Lagann.

I mean, can you believe it? Sunrise didn’t introduce even more overpowered suits like I had originally thought when Sumeragi called for “R2″ to be sent. They got a downgrade instead, and what satisfying downgrade that was. Although, it seems Exia was somewhat improved with a new blade. And I still prefer Rogue Exia.

When Gundam 00 first started, I was very critical of it. Looking back now, yes it still sucks for the most parts but at least now I’m proud to say that I liked the series. It was entertaining and I can’t wait for the movie to be out next year.

Hallelujah finally gets to show his stuff in S2, too bad he got pwned soon after…

I think Allelujah/Hallelujah is the most talented pilot in Gundam 00 before Setsuna turned Innovator. There’s Ribbons too, but he only fought in the final episode and only against Innovator Setsuna. He’s probably better than H/Allelujah, but overall H/Allelujah’s fight has always been much more entertaining and he usually always win right before he gets pwned.

You don’t often get a crazy, insane pilot such as him on the good side, especially in a Gundam series. Those roles are usually filled in by some experimental or just plain insane pilots from the enemy’s side.

The Immortal Coleslaw Colasour Returns!

It’s not surprising that Patrick is alive (even though I’ve had completely forgotten about him until Lindt hinted it).

It’s not that surprising that he is in A-LAWS.

Aww… She cares…

What’s really surprising is the fact that Kati had actually been in contact with him this whole time! DX

With everyone on the Ptolemy going on about their “reason to fight”, it would seem that Patrick will eventually become Kati’s reason to fight. Then once the Immortal Colselaw Colasour kicks the bucket, Kati would have her reason to go all out against her former comrade and fellow strategic analyst, Sumeragi.

Someone who calls himself an immortal is only painting himself as a big target to be killed off and the only way for ressurection is through either returning as the masked man or if you’re a badass final villain. And since he isn’t exactly a bad person, and we already have Mr. Bushido as the masked crusader of g00, Patrick will probably die a horrible, terrible death without hope of returning. He’s already escaped death once.

Gives us back Peries!

Soma Peries had become a really interesting character in the second season, but now it’s all ruined. Soma was very swiftly replaced by her original personality and Allelujah’s long lost sweetheart, Marie. Parfacy somehow always makes me think of parfaits, and maybe that’s where she got her name because Marie is so sweet that I’m beginning to get cavities. Her personality did a 180 turn, and so she lost everything and anything that made her interesting.

Despite Allelujah’s happiness, I want Soma Peries back.

“Tieria “Trap-mode” Erde, ready to flirt!”

The producers must have waited long for this day to finally show the full glory of the shemale that is Tieria Erde.

Not that it’s a bad thing, but seriously, wtf have Sunrise done to Tieria?!

Tieria used to be the biggest bitch in Celestial Being, but he was somewhat a lovable rather interesting character to hate with an attitude. The mission was everything and there were no rooms for errors to be made. He was even willing to take out a fellow Meister if that was what it took to complete their objective.

It was refreshing that he’s toned down a little and wasn’t being so stubborn, but episode 3 clearly showed that his personality had done a complete turnaround during the 5 years gap.

The old Tieria would have kept this information hidden from Setsuna…

This is where Tieria would have reminded Setsuna not to play the hero and risk jeopardizing the mission…

*speechless* This is NOT the Tieria Erde we know! It’s an imposter! He even welcomed Allelujah back *gasp*!

On a side note…

“Oh shit, I feel something up my ass!”

The Ptolemy II has gained ArchAngel’s submarine mode. Next up, indoor hot springs bath! We can then have an entire comic relief episode surrounding the bath  :twisted:

Gundam 00 Returns…

It’s been a long while since I wrote anything at all – including blog posts, leaving comments and forum posts. Much of the free time I do have are spent traveling (I’ve probably traveled more in the past couple of months than I did the entire of last year) and playing Ragnarok Online on a private server.

I’ve been hoping to get some motivation to start writing again, and while Code Geass R2 has been pretty awesome in the last few episodes, it didn’t give me any push to start writing about it. I was beginning to wonder if I’ve completely lost my interest in blogging, but the first episode of Gundam 00’s 2nd season have re-sparked the dying flame.

The episode itself is a lot better compared to season 1’s opening. In the short amount of time they’ve managed to squeeze in all the returning characters while at the same time revealing what each of them have been up to during the 5 years gap between season 1 and 2.

Exia never looked this good while it was in tip-top shape…

Setsuna is much more mature now, or at least that’s the impression I’m getting based on how he handled Saji. He had been in hiding for the past 5 years along with what’s left of Exia, although why he never tried to contact the rest of the Celestial Beings hasn’t been revealed yet. But I’m sure we will all find out soon by the next episode, along with why some of the other core members have gone their separate ways, willingly or not.

All the goodness of Virtue minus the fat = Seravee

Tieria looks acts less like a bitch and his Seravee looks more sturdy than fat when compared to Virtue. But it’s still a fatty Gundam with a shemale Mobile Suit hidden underneath it all. I doubt they can re-use Nadleeh as Seravee’s “core” since Nadleeh’s function has been rendered useless even before it made itself useful in the first place. It would be interesting to see what this new so-called-hidden-but-damn-obvious unit inside Seravee is capable of doing. The biggest shock here is that Tieria told Saji to thank Setsuna. Did he knock his head or something? But for once I actually agree with him, so maybe I’m the one who had my head knocked…

Tiki Head Gundam

Oh, and I won’t be surprised if Sunrise decided to pull a Voltron in G00. I mean, what other reason do you have for putting a huge Gundam face on the entire backside of a Mobile Suit, unless you’re going to use it as a head for an even bigger and badass MS? We’ll have the Meisters going “Gundam, Gattai!” by the middle of Season 2, with flashy animation of different Gundams forming different parts of a huge mecha body. Then we’ll call it, Gundam 0.0!

I wonder if he’s had any sleep the past 5 years?

Allelujah and Sumeragi are apparently broken. Allelujah is strapped on a chair in an isolate asylum while Sumeragi is seen having a hangover in bed after having some fun with Billy.

Lockon Stratos LIVES!

Near the end of the episode Setsuna was seen recruiting Lyle as the new Lockon Stratos, replacing his supposedly dead (supposedly, because this is Sunrise we’re talking about) twin brother. The episode preview also showed Setsuna showing up to bring back their pretty useless tactician, so I’m guessing Setsuna could well be the unofficial new commander of Celestial Being, a role which was taken on by Lockon before.

Grown up Soma, I like <3

Sergei is probably trying to adopt Soma as a step-daughter. Or he could have asked her to marry him. I don’t blame him. I used to hate Soma, but now I think I’m in love XD

I actually can’t wait for episode 2. Maybe it’s just my Gundam fanboy side trying to satisfy itself with anything as long as it’s Gundam.

A few weeks ago I made a post saying how/why Gundam 00 sucks, but now I’m forced to pull back some of my earlier comments because damn, it got better!

While I’m sure most would agree that Sergei is currently the most kick-ass character in the g00ey-verse (just as how most would agree that Saji and Louise are nothing more than annoyance that leeches screen time to drag the episode a few minutes longer so far), both Graham Acre and Ali al-Serges have slowly faded away (temporarily, just to make way for Sergei to show off his awesomeness, I’m sure).

And the Meisters actually got some character development time! Sure, the Meisters only developed their emo-selves, but still development nonetheless.

Apparently, the Meisters names as we know it are all fakes. That explains “Lockon Stratos” to some degree At least we now know he wasn’t born to be a sniper, but a name he later on took up. Now I’m curious as to what the F. in Setsuna’s name stands for… I can think of a few but none are pleasant enough to be mentioned and they are all variations of the same “F” word.

Some Truth Behind the Meisters

Setsuna F. Seiei isn’t really a Japanese like his name might imply. He’s really a Kurdish (but you can’t really tell nationalities or even race in anime most of the time) by the name of Kamal Mazirif. Okay so I no longer have a gripe with his name. I do have a gripe that he just easily divulged top secret information to Marina that easily. Tiera would have a field day if he found out.

Lockon Stratos really is Neil Dylandy, an Irish who lost his parents in a terrorist attack. However, it seems that he had (or rather, still have) an evil twin brother. Still not much is known except for what he had revealed to Felt.

Allelujah probably has the most interesting story so far. He is very likely a HRL citizen since he came from the same lab as Soma, a fellow genetically advanced human (aka 00-NewTypes). And, he has a second personality, Hallelujah, the Mr. Hyde of Allelujah Haptism.

As for Tieria, I’ve always regarded Tiera as a she-male and now Sunrise has decided to prove that theory with Nadleeh:

Google “Nadleeh” if you don’t know what it means yet.

Other than being a she-male, Tiera seems to have an ability to hack into systems using his mind or something, which is shown when his eyes starts to glow colorfully like the shiny part of a CD that’s reflecting light.

Veda Veda Veda

Right now I’m most curious about Veda. It’s easy to assume that Veda is a supercomputer with some degree of AI, but what exactly is Veda, what makes it so special and why are the Celestial Beings following Veda’s orders?

Did Veda came up with the Gundam designs? At this point, I would believe that it might have something to do with them. After all, its obvious that the Meisters were picked out by Veda.

With the appearance of Nadleeh, I think it’s only a matter of time before the other Gundam starts revealing that there are more to them than meets the eye. So far I can only guess that Exia’s complete form would look something like Destiny (well, makes sense, especially when you compare both pilots) capable of producing some sort of “Wings of Light” as shown near the end of the OP animation.

Possible Hint towards “Final Form” Exia?

Celestial Beings are over-powered

With the exception of the 3 ship alliance in Gundam Seed Destiny (and they can hardly be called new and inexperienced in mobile suit wars), Celestial Beings are to my knowledge the first ever organization with Gundams that pwned everyone from the very beginning.

The Gundams are simply in a different league mainly due to the mobile suit itself as shown by the battles between Setsuna against either Graham Acre or Ali Al-Serges. It gives you a sense of excitement to see just how powerful a Gundam is even when compared to the latest prototype any of the other factions could throw at it with highly skilled and experienced pilots.

Unlike previous Gundam series as well, Celestial Beings roam around rather freely and instead of running away from certain authorities, they go to them whenever challenged and make ‘em piss in their pants with the entire world watching.

This style reminds me of the Saiyuki series, with 4 rather eccentric bastards party members who could easily pwn most enemies right from the start. Its a formula that worked really well with Saiyuki, and seems to be doing OK for g00ey.

Impressive Side Characters

Graham Acre, Ali al-Serges, Sergei Smirnov and Wang Liu Mei (just for being pretty ).

Graham Acre is the elite of the elite in my opinion. Not only is he a superb pilot, he’s just brimming with confidence and a little bit gung-ho. His only drawback is his obsession with Gundam thats a little too much over the top.

Ali al-Serges is even more crazier than Graham Acre, and also more mysterious. From what I can make out so far, he seemed to be behind the war which we saw Setsuna fighting as a child at the opening of the series. He also apparently influenced many children to murder their family and join his cause to fight for their God. He’s charismatic in a sense, but Ali al-Serges is holding back a lot more than what we or Setsuna knows.

My first impression of Sergei Smirnov was that he’s your usual heartless, hardheaded military top official who follows orders without questioning them. But I was wrong, he seemed to be the most compassionate of the entire Gundam 00 cast. If only he had a cooler suit than that poor excuse of scrap metal.

Wang Liu Mei caught my attention from the very first episode. She had that deep mysterious aura that pulls you in, although so far other than sitting there and looking pretty, she had contributed pretty much nothing for the plot. But hey, she’s great at sitting (or standing) around looking good

Are the Gundam and Veda Alive?

Another reason that compelled me to watch the episodes one after another right now is to find out the secret behind the Gundam and the GN Particles. The Meisters often calls out to their Gundam as if talking to them and telling them what to do or what they are going to do. I’ve never seen any pilot “talking” to their MS and I’m really curious about the reason behind it.

This is especially so with Veda, which appears to be Sumeragi’s computer. Looks to me as if all those “Sumeragi’s predictions” are really Veda’s predictions. Just what the heck is Veda? Allelujah also mentioned that the Meisters were chosen by none other than Veda.

While it is possible that the Meisters are just relaying information back to Sumeragi by announcing their unit and action, somehow it just feels a bit stupid to be announcing your every action when Sumeragi can see everything anyway.

Gundam 00 Sucks. Go Watch It!

Gundam 00 sucks, but in a way that would make you want to watch it, for better or worse. Am I glad I decided to watch g00? Yes, definitely. It’s actually rather fun, in a weird kind of way, at least that’s how I feel. How about you?

“We’re very serious. You should be, too.”

Gundam 00 has mysteriously got me hooked, having me wait anxiously every week for the latest episode. It has become one of my most anticipated weekly doses of fresh anime.

However, ask me why it’s good and you would see me pausing and hesitating for a while trying to think of an answer. Ask me what’s wrong, and be prepared to sit down with a cup of coffee or tea. It’s gonna be quite a lengthy ride.

Prominent Characters

Side characters have more depth compared to our “heroes”…

Gundam 00 has some prominent characters. Unfortunately, none of them are part of the Gundam Meisters. Sure the Meisters gets the most screen time and action. But other than Allelujah’s sudden madman outburst in episode 5 and Lockon’s conversation with his best robo-buddy Haro, there just isn’t any attraction to the Meister’s characters.

On the other hand, side characters are leaving a deeper impression. Graham Acre is possibly the most well built character so far and is much cooler than any of the Meisters. What’s even more worrying is that a new character that has just been introduced and has about 5 minutes of screen time is already becoming THE coolest cast of all – Ali Al-Serges.

In his on-screen debut mobile suit battle, he’s already pwning the great Exia who had just been upgraded with new equipments. If Setsuna can defeat an entire army on his own, and he’s getting his ass whipped by Ali, think of what Ali could do! Then again, it could just mean that Exia is an awesome suit and Setsuna just plain sucks. Either way works for Ali and against the Meister’s reputation.

Let’s not forget Sergei as well. He appears to be the most reasonable person in the entire Gundam 00 cast. If only he didn’t have to pilot that ugly mobile suit. It makes Zaku looks like a beauty contest winner.

Awesome Naming Sense

Read: Sarcasm…

Setsuna F. Seiei. First time I’ve heard a Japanese with a middle name and actually introduces himself as such. Okay, so that could happen. But it still feels weird. And let’s not even get into Saji and Kinue Crossroads (unless their father is a western).

Allelujah Haptism. Haptism? Baptism? I wonder if Sunrise took the idea from the PC game, Worms. If you’ve played the game you will definitely know of the Holy Grenade. You know, the one that goes “allelujah~” before it decimates your opponents (or yourself, as the case may be). Seeing how Allelujah did explode and went mad in episode 5, that might really be the case. Seriously… Allelujah?

Lockon Stratos. A sniper. “Locked-on stratosphere”? When Setsuna shouted for Lockon to fire in the first episode, I didnt’ even realize he was calling his name. I wonder if Celestial Being gave him the sniper Gundam, Dynames, because of his name. It’s just too twisted.

Tieria Erde. Sounds like a female name. Tieria looks like a female. Until he opens his mouth and reveals the shocking truth. “She” is a “he”. Up until the final moment in the final moment in the first episode, I’ve thought Tieria was a girl (even though I should have known when Virtue made its debut, but still the realization never hit me until Tieria was out of the suit).

Return of the NewTypes

And I thought they threw it out together with the Zaku’s…

Allelujah and Soma obviously shares some kind of connection resembling the NewType ability to sense each other’s presence. But that’s not where it ends, the ability gets an upgrade now that both people could enter each other’s mind and communicate directly via telepathy.

Graham Acre is Gay

Especially when he steps into his Flag…

He’s so passionately obsessed with Exia that the only explanation I can think of is that he’s gaying with the Gundam. He might have a thing for younger guys too, since he could so easily “sense” that Exia’s pilot is young. It just feels gay. But Graham is still cool.

Emo Pilots

Picture worth a thousand words?

Have you ever seen a grouchier bunch of Gundam pilots? Okay, to be fair, Lockon isn’t that emo. He’s quite lively actually compared to the rest.

Gundam 00 Sucks?

I find Gundam 00 sucks, yes. However, I’m definitely growing to like it as well. As I did this rant I came to realize some of the reasons why Gundam 00 has increasingly grab my interest with each passing episode. But that is a story for another day…

1. Kira rocked.And because Shinn sucked so bad, Kira rocked even more. He has become more than just the Ultimate Coordinator. He is the God of War. There was even an episode dedicated to show just that – episode 39: Kira of the Heavens. Now if that isn’t the declaration that Kira is indeed the ultimate fighting machine in C.E., I don’t know what is. While Kira had to struggle against many opponents in Seed, he pretty much takes on everyone and their cousins with relatively ease, making Destiny and Destroy look like nothing but child’s play.

2. Infinite Justice kicks ass. If Kira is the God of War, then Athrun with his Infinite Justice is, without a doubt, the Melee God. The original Justice wasn’t shown as prominently, and definitely takes far less notice compared to Freedom. But Infinite Justice kicks ass here. Infinite Justice went up against Destiny not once, but twice, allowing Strike Freedom to take on Legend. And every time Athrun decides to get serious, Shinn gets trashed like no tomorrow, making Infinite Justice the hero for many anti-Shinn/Destiny fans. Fukuda was probably taking this chance to make up for Athrun’s uselessness during most of the season. Too bad I can’t say the same for Cagalli…

3. Shinn got owned. Pretty much every scene where Shinn got owned became some of my favourite parts of the series. I hate Shinn ever since he first started to blame Cagalli for his loss. Keeping in mind that I watched this part first before watching Seed, I can safely say that I didn’t start hating Shinn because I supported the old cast. I didn’t even know who were the old cast and who are the new ones. So Shinn getting pwned is fun to watch for me.

4. Return of Fllaga. I’ll admit the idea of Phantom Mask is really Fllaga never occured to me until the episode where he repeated a phrase from Seed about chasing the “cute kittens”. It was a pleasant surprise that Fllaga somehow miraculously survived the Lohengrin blast from Dominion and that he would eventually rejoin the Archangel, piloting the Hyaku-Shiki Akatsuki.

5. Archangel upgraded. Not only can the legendary Archangel dive underwater now, they even built a hot springs bath in the damn warship! It’s no longer just a first-class warship, it also has first-class comfort facilities! The Archangel itself isn’t the only one with upgrades, the crew themselves seemed to be much more skillful and calm than they were during the previous war. Barrel-roll maneuver? Nothing to it. Facing an incoming positron cannon beam? Been there, done that. Twice.

6. Great OST. Even though overall I feel that Seed had nicer songs, I think that Destiny had more songs that are good. I can pick out more songs I liked in Destiny compared to Seed. And of course, T.M. Revolution

7. Better animation. Quality wise it’s definitely an improvement over Seed. The quality of designs and animation are important in any anime, and Destiny definitely performed well here. Too bad I can’t say the same for overall plot.

At the end of Destiny (based on Final Plus) Shinn finally made peace with Kira. That would suggest that if there are to be anymore sequels, the 3 Ship Alliance would actually have Shinn on their side as well. I may hate Shinn, but it would be cool to have him fight alongside Kira and Athrun.

The invincible duo (Kira and Athrun) in Seed became the invincible trio (Kira, Athrun and Fllaga) in Destiny. Would we see the invincible quartet in the next installation of Gundam Seed and the C.E. Universe with Shinn in the mix? Only time would tell but it would be fun to watch that’s for sure

Gundam Kyrios can also morph into an aircraft (similar to Wing) in its Flying Mode. Kyrios is the tallest unit and seems to be the coolest Gundam so far in Gundam 00, but we’ll have to see its performance later on. Gundam Virtue kind of reminds me of a sumo wrestler with its bulky design.

Union Flag and AEU Enact are quite similar to each other, and resembles something that came out of Zone of Enders.

The 4 main characters are -

• Setsuna F Seiei (16)
• Lockon Stratos (24)
• Allelujah Haptism (19)
• Tieria Erde (unknown)

There are also a whole bunch of supporting cast, which by far looks more interesting compared to the main characters.

Just 2 more months to go before Gundam 00 goes on air and it has already been announced that L’Arc~en~Ciel will be performing the first opening theme for the new Gundam series. The song is titled “Daybreak’s Bell“ and its single will be released on October 10, around the same time as Gundam 00.

This is not the first time L’Arc~en~Ciel’s songs had been selected for an anime theme. They’ve also performed for Rurouni Kenshin’s 4th ending theme“The Fourth Avenue Cafe”, Full Metal Alchemist’s 2nd opening theme “Ready Steady Go”, the ending theme for Full Metal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa “Lost Heaven” and the opening for Blood+ “Season’s Call” was by HYDE, their lead singer (thanks to anemone for correcting me). The group also did the closing theme, “Spirits dreams inside”, for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
