Spring Anime 2011 Impressions: Ao no Exorcist

Posted by Neko Kyou in Thoughts on April 27th, 2011

This was one of the series I had been looking forward to watching ever since seeing the trailer a month ago and it didn’t disappoint. My first impression of it would be a mix of Index, Shana and FMA;  two parallel worlds of human and demons, church influence and the use of magical incantations and magic circles.

Design and animation is definitely top-notched, perhaps even the best this season have to offer. The setting is simple, straightforward and a formula that works. The son of Satan that had been raised human finally finds out the secret behind his birth and rather than rejoining the evil side, he decided to be part of the Exorcist group in order to get revenge for his human father.

I’ve also heard great things about the manga and while I don’t plan to follow the manga (currently), I’m definitely a fan of the anime already.

Spring Anime 2011 Impressions: C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

Posted by Neko Kyou in Thoughts on April 20th, 2011

C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control is one of the Spring 2011 anime that caught my attention during its announcement and I have to admit it’s largely because the name is very similar to “Money and Probability” in Bakuman. Of course, the similarity is in the name only but it was enough to get me interested.

The story for C seems to be set in the modern world where a mysterious race of beings that cannot be seen with the naked eyes offers a large sum of money for those who need it with their future used as collateral. The first few minutes is really quite confusing with so many actions going on at once that is never once explained. It will probably take a few episodes before anything really makes sense, but in the mean time the great design, animation and intriguing storyline is enough to hook you in to want to continue watching and find out more.

As far as first impressions go for this season, C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control is sitting at the top right now. It doesn’t hurt that they can summon Anubis for battle and one of the chars reminds me the Mad Hatter.

Loving Gosick Episode 12 (Moe Overload!)

Posted by Neko Kyou in Thoughts on April 12th, 2011

Umbrella Butt Rape!

No new mysteries to solve, no new adventures to go on. Just spending some time doing nothing much at the academy during summer vacation. Pretty much peace and quiet the entire episode.

But at the same time we get to see so much of Victorique making expressions so cute you could just die from moe overload >.<

The part where Victorique dropped and broke the tea set and Kujo tried to clean up the mess, I was half expecting him to look up (which he did) and see something he’s not supposed to (after all, that Kimono looks pretty loose) but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Although, Kujo did look a little bit happy when he was ordered by Victorique to “suck it all up”…

While there really isn’t any case going on, this has been one of the more enjoyable episodes of Gosick so far.

If you haven’t tried Gosick yet, you’re really missing out on what would probably be one of the best series 2011 have to offer. The OP and ED are also some of the best.

Opening – Destin Historie

Ending – Resuscitated Hope

Clip is from the first episode of Gosick

Spring Anime 2011 Impressions: Nichijou (Selamat Pagi!)

Posted by Neko Kyou in Thoughts on April 7th, 2011

Nichijou is pretty silly, doesn’t really make any sense and the art and animation is kinda meh. But it does bring in the laughs, which started to kick in for me until the “Selamat Pagi” gag, which means good morning in Malay (and for those of you wondering, Selamat Malam is good night).

It kinda reminds me of Kyou no Go no Ni, although I can’t really find myself to really like Nichijou just yet. While there are some parts that just makes you laugh, there are just many stupid jokes that ruins the mood.

I’ll probably need to give Nichijou another episode before deciding whether or not to continue watching it.

Spring Anime 2011 Impressions: Dog Days

Posted by Neko Kyou in Thoughts on April 6th, 2011

Dog Days is really quite different than what I imagined it would be. It starts off pretty standard for a fantasy story and makes you believe that this is really about a kid getting whisked off to another world in order to become a war hero and lead the underdogs to victory.

But just as the plot starts to sink in a little and the war begins, everything gets thrown off a little when the “war” is really a large scale reality show / obstacle course much like Takeshi’s Castle and Wipeout.

And to be honest, I quite like it lol.

I was afraid that Dog Days would end up being another generic fantasy medieval warfare but the silliness that comes from how the war is played out is actually interesting.

Dog Days might actually end up as one of the more entertaining series among the spring anime season for 2011.
